STEM Activities In Schools

Science Connects holds the STEMNET contract for brokerage of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematical activities to primary and secondary schools for the West of Scotland. Science Connects can give you advice on which STEM activities are available in this region, what pupil level the activities are suitable for, and how they link to the Curriculum for Excellence.

STEM Ambassadors

Science Connects holds the STEMNET contract for STEM Ambassadors (formerly SEAs) for the West of Scotland. STEM Ambassadors give a few hours of their time to help inspire young people in STEM by giving career talks, helping with activities in the classroom or at science festivals. Science Centres

The following science centre is located in the West Region.

  • Glasgow Science Centre Visitor attraction in Glasgow. The gleaming titanium crescent overlooking the Clyde has three floors packed with hundreds of interactive exhibits that will fascinate you. Learn about science in a fun, inspiring way!

Science Festivals

  • Glasgow University Science Festival An exciting science, arts and learning festival in June based at the University of Glasgow. A huge range of lively and interactive activities.

  • AAA Maths AAA Math features a comprehensive set of interactive arithmetic lessons.
  • BMFA Education Programme The BMFA education programme aims to encourage youngsters to build and fly model aircraft and so develop new skills and gain an insight into the science and technology of flight.
  • BodyWorks on Tour BodyWorks on Tour is a new outreach programme, from Glasgow Science Centre, about our amazing bodies. These engaging science shows, interactive workshops and amazing exhibits are the perfect complement to the Curriculum for Excellence science and health and wellbeing outcomes. There is an experience available for all ages:
  • British Science Association The British Science Asspciation runs the CREST Investigators and Crest Awards schemes. The activities focus on thinking about, talking about and doing science.
  • Clyde Waterfront Education A river of learning, a stream of ideas This is a valuable new educational resource to support teachers in the Clyde Waterfront area and to connect local young people with all the exciting developments happening along the river.
  • Computing Science Inside Computing Science Inside an online resource to bring Computing Science alive.
  • Discover Engineering Discover Engineering Discover Engineering provides a gateway to numerous websites for young engineers.
  • Do something creative. Do Science. Ever considered a career in science? The options open to you may be surprising and more exciting than you think
  • Engeneration Engeneration is a free-to-join membership scheme for all 13 - 19 year old students of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths, including the Engineering Diploma and other qualifications that can lead to a career in Engineering.
  • Engineering the Future Engineering the Future (EtF) is an EPSRC funded project based in the Universities of Strathclyde and Glasgow which is exploring ways of meeting the major challenge facing engineering: the predicted and growing shortfall between the numbers currently entering engineering and future demand.
  • Learning Grid Directory The Learning Grid has been created to meet the needs of students, teachers and industry by bringing together different programmes and competitions for young people.
  • Generation Science Edinburgh International Science Festival's schools touring programme.
  • Lab in a Lorry Lab in a Lorry is an interactive mobile science laboratory staffed by volunteer practising scientists and engineers.
  • MadLab MadLab is a unique, hands-on electronics workshop for children and adults.
  • nrich The NRICH Project aims to enrich the mathematical experiences of all learners.
  • Physics and Ethics Education Project An interactive website and virtual learning environment for secondary school science teachers and their students.
  • Planet Science A web site run by the National Endowment for Science Technology and the Arts (NESTA) packed full of resources and ideas for all children who study science and the teachers and other adults who support them.
  • ScienceProjectIdeas ScienceProjectIdeas is the ideal place for parents and teachers wanting to explore science with children.
  • Survival Rivals Experiments for schools inspired by Darwin Hands-on experiments, inspired by Darwin and free of charge to UK state secondary schools. Plus free online resources for all schools.
  • The Scottish Network for Able Pupils (SNAP) The Scottish Network for Able Pupils (SNAP) runs courses and workshops for teachers and able pupils. SNAP is working across the UK with schools and Education Authorities and also gives keynote addresses and advice to parents.
  • Think Darwin, Think Evolution, Think Now Think Darwin, Think Evolution, Think Now has been produced by SIBE (Scottish Initiative for Biotechnology Education) at The University of Edinburgh to celebrate the 200th birthday of Charles Darwin.
  • UK School Seismology Project The sheer destructive power of earthquakes has always held a fascination for children. This project capitalises on this natural interest by making use of earthquakes and seismology as a unifying theme to teach a range of basic science concepts.
  • West Point Bridge Design Competition Could you be a bridge designer of the future? The Institution of Civil Engineers invites you to take up this challenge. The Challenge is to design a new bridge which is required to cross the River Forth - Could you design it?
  • What do Civil Engineers do? Civil Engineers design and build all the static structures in the world around us, covering such things as Transport, Energy, Water, Structures.

  • Young Engineers & Science Clubs
  • Young Engineers and Science Clubs Scotland The Young Engineers and Science Clubs Scotland project is organised by the Scottish Council for Development and Industry, and has been running since 1987. The purpose of the Clubs is to engage young people in practical hands-on science and engineering activities and to enthuse them to pursue a career in science, engineering and technology.
