FREE experiment kits to ALL state secondary schools

March 2009

You are probably already aware that the year 2009 is the 150th anniversary of the publication "On the Origin of Species" and the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth. To celebrate the Wellcome Trust are providing FREE experiment kits to ALL state secondary schools across the UK. The experiments are designed to be simple yet effective, and illustrate Darwin's theories of evolution in practice.

The British Science Association in partnership with the Wellcome Trust has linked the experiments to the CREST award scheme. I would like to stress here that our message to schools is that with further development the experiments could be accredited with CREST. As with any CREST registration, students must complete the appropriate CREST Profile Form and fulfill the assessment criteria.

There are three kits in the ‘Survival Rivals’ series:

  • I’m a Worm, Get Me Out of Here (exploring natural selection) for 11-14 yrs linked to the Bronze CREST award
  • Brine Date (looking at sexual selection) for 14-16 yrs linked to the Silver CREST award
  • The X-Bacteria (investigating antibiotic resistance in bacteria) for 16-18 yrs linked to the Gold CREST award

Each kit contains everything teachers and students need to carry out the experiments in school.
