Engineering the Future
Engineering the Future (EtF) is an EPSRC funded project based in the Universities of Strathclyde and Glasgow which is exploring ways of meeting the major challenge facing engineering: the predicted and growing shortfall between the numbers currently entering engineering and future demand.
With a lack of powerful positive media images, young people lack an informed view of enginering. School courses provide limited experiences of engineering leaving young people unaware of the nature of engineering and the diverse career paths it offers.
EtF is working on several fronts:
- Building university-schools partnerships in electronic and electrical engineering
- These are creating secondary school science and physics units which develop the knowledge skills and mindsets required by engineering.
- Creating engineering careers materials
- Developing an on-line interactive game
- Addressing school university transition issues
- Working with university colleagues on learning in the first year of EEE courses
- Maintaining dialogue on how engineering can be embedded in the school curriculum
A number of school engineering units have been developed and are currently being trialled. These cover all years S1 through to S6 and topics ranging from tracking bats, controlling a Mars exploration vehicle, building alarm systems and wind powered generators and working out the contents of electronic black boxes.
