At Townhill we want to generate interest in and enthusiasm for Science, Engineering and Technology within the school and in our community. To achieve this we are planning to host a Science Showcase during NSEW.
This will take place on Wed 16th March 2011.
Parents/friends, local community groups and local businesses will be invited to attend. Each class will have a stand/display manned by pupils which will provide a way of communicating the Science, Technology and Engineering which has been taking place in different classes. There will also be hands on activities for visitors to try. Pupils will also experience a special Science activity/visit during that week.
Each stage will work on Science activities around the NSEW theme of Message Makers or Communication. The pupils will work on these activities in class and will work towards producing a display of their work for our showcase. These displays will be set up around the Gym Hall to create a room full of Science. Each display will be manned by pupils who will have the opportunity to talk to visitors about their Science activities. The groups indicated in my previous email will be invited to visit our showcase.
A rough guide of content of displays is as follows:
- P1- Communicating through sound, experimenting with musical instruments
- ?P2- Animal communication using the context of The Gruffalo story?
- P3- Communicating information through graphs/charts using the context of Minibeasts?
- P4- Using magnets to carry a message around a track
- ?P5- Using light as a form of communication
- ?P6- Space communication including rockets/satellites
- P7- Communicating instructions to a robot using electronics as part of the Robokid project from Heriot Watt University
We are also intending to have various Science visits that week but these are still to be confirmed. Ideas include: Mobile Planetarium visit, Food technology lab, Outreach visit from zoo or Amazonia.
