The following activities are available with the North East.

Science Centres

The following science centres are located in the North East.

  • Satrosphere This visitor attraction in Aberdeen offers interactive ways for visitors to discover more about the world around them and the science of how things work.
  • Sensation Visitor attraction in Dundee. Discover the wonders of science through your senses with over 80 hands-on interactive exhibits. Sensation has something for everyone.

Science Festivals

The following science festivals are located in the North East.

  • Stem Cells - A Vision of the Future Free film screening followed by refreshments and a discussion with Prof Ian Chambers as part of the Orkney International Science Festival.
  • TechFest In September Science Festival TechFest In September is Aberdeen and the North East of Scotland's annual festival of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) organised by TechFest-SetPoint.
  • The Dundee Science Festival 2009 brings a change to our primary science festival held in Dundee. 'The Dundee Science Festival', formerly known as 'Science in September', for primary 4, 5, 6 & 7 pupils, sponsored by Dundee City Council's Education Development Service will now be held in October.

Others Activities

The following others activities are located in the North East.

  • Chemistry at Work Chemistry at Work provides S3 pupils from Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire, Moray and Angus with an insight into the many different career options that can result from studying Chemistry.
  • Cosmic Dome Cosmic Dome, TechFest-SetPoint's mobile planetarium, can bring astronomy and colour shows to you. The Night Sky Show Moon and Seasons Workshop Day and Night, Sun and Moon Show Light and Sound Show Colour Workshop Shows are presenter-led, curriculum-based and can be tailored to your needs.
  • Crest Awards CREST is the nationwide curriculum enrichment award scheme for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
  • Curious about Chemistry Curious about Chemistry is an event for Primary 7 pupils open to all schools in Angus, Dundee and Perth and Kinross. This year, as in previous years, it will be supported by Dundee College who are kindly providing their Graham Street Campus to host the event. A date for this year's (2009) event is to be confirmed.
  • Generation Science Generation Science ? an inspiring primary schools outreach programme of 17 interactive shows and hands on workshops supporting teachers in the delivery of the curriculum for excellence. We visit schools throughout the country from Shetland to Dumfries with over 60,000 children enjoying our shows each year.
  • Junior Engineer for Britain K'Nex Challenge Junior Engineer for Britain K'Nex Challenge aims to provide primary school pupils (P4-P6) with an exciting introduction to the world of Engineering and Technology by inviting them to produce a specific design solution for a problem and then build it using K'Nex.
  • K'NEXT Generation:It's Not Rocket science! Following a presenter led discussion about rocket power and the forces involved when rockets leave the Earth, pupils will work in teams of 3, as they design and build their own rocket powered vehicle. Each team will then have a chance to demonstrate to their class mates how their vehicle works and explain any problems they encountered and how they solved them. There will then be an opportunity for pupils to improve their vehicle, armed with the knowledge gained from testing and discussion.
  • Maths In The Pipeline 'Maths in the Pipeline' is a full day of mathematical workshops and challenge for 15 year olds based on the applications of mathematics in the oil and gas industry. All the workshops are based on real data and the Captain Field in the Moray Firth is used as an example.
  • Maths Masterclasses This series takes place on 8 Saturday mornings between October and February. Forty places are available for Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire pupils each year and schools are asked to nominate S2 pupils who would both enjoy and benefit from this opportunity. Interested teachers are most welcome to attend any of the classes and their support as tutors is invaluable.
  • Nuffield Science Bursaries for Schools and Colleges The Nuffield Bursary scheme is aimed at 5th year school or college students who are interested in the sciences, technology, engineering and/or mathematics. The aim is to allow the students to carry out a 4-6 week research or development project in universities, colleges, industry, research or conservation organisations during the summer break. Unlike work experience schemes, students carry out projects that are well-defined from the start, have an outcome that is achievable within the time available and which will make a contribution to the work of the host organisation.
  • Primary Enterprising Maths This annual challenge is open to Primary 6 and Primary 7 pupils in Aberdeen City. Each school can enter a team of three pupils with an accompanying teacher/adult. A team should consist of at least one boy and one girl but need not be a mixture of P6 and P7.
  • Primary Schools Outreach TechFest-SetPoint offers a range of outreach shows and workshops suitable for primary schools. These activities provide an excellent opportunity for pupils to engage in enjoyable and challenging activities linked to the curriculum.
  • School's Engineering Challenge Now in its 15th year, the Challenge is open to pupils in Primary P6 and P7 and Secondary S1 and S2 from schools in Aberdeen City and 'Shire.
  • Science Clubs In association with the Children's University of Aberdeen, TechFest-SetPoint organises a number of after-school clubs.
  • Shell Greenpower Challenge for Schools Greenpower is a national project which has been running since 1999 and is designed to promote and encourage young people to develop an interest in and understanding of engineering and technology. The programme involves students in the practical applications of engineering as they design, construct, drive and race an electric car.
  • STEM Directory The STEM Directory is our programme for Secondary schools which runs all year. The Directory will be available in all Scottish schools mid-late September.
  • STEM In The Pipeline STEM In The Pipeline is a 3-part oil and gas industry project for teams of S6 pupils, age ~17 years.
