The Big Bang Scotland 2011

Big Bang Scotland
Techfest Setpoint
13th June 2011
Perth Concert Hall, Perth, PH1 5HZ

The Perth Concert Hall is to play host to The Big Bang Scotland incorporating the National Science & Engineering Competition, CREST Awards and Young Engineers for Britain Awards on Monday 13th June. The search is on again for Scotland’s best young scientists and engineers, as school pupils gear up to showcase their scientific innovations and creations at The Big Bang Scotland.

Organised by TechFest-SetPoint, for the second year, there will be over 270 competing pupils attending on the day bringing over 90 STEM projects with them in the hope for recognition and the chance to go to Birmingham for the national Big Bang 2012.

Again joining our diverse panel of judges from business, industry and academia from across Scotland, former BBC presenter, Dr Heather ‘The Weather’ Reid will be using her judging skills and showing her talent as MC by announcing the award winners on the day.

In addition to the competition there will be a whole host of fun and exciting activities throughout the day. Visiting schools and teachers alike will have the opportunity to get involved in a range of STEM related experiences from helping to build a giant tetrahedron and teaching robots to dance, to worlds of astronomy and tiny atoms in the Buckyball workshop. Please note that places for all workshops are limited so please register as a visiting school as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Furthermore, while having fun you will discover the career opportunities which exist within the industries of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics from the hands-on providers situated in the foyer of the concert hall. All visiting schools will also have the opportunity to visit the projects in the main auditorium and hopefully be inspired and take away ideas for their own future projects.

The feature finale show for the competitors is ‘Hollywood Science’ based on the BBC Open University TV series Hollywood Science and presented by Dr Jonathan Hare (Nobel Prize in Chemistry) who asks how realistic is the science behind some of Hollywood’s classic movies and stunts. Films may include SPEED, The Score, Waterworld, UP, etc. This show is non-bookable at the moment and is intended for competitors only but spaces may become available nearer the time.

The project application deadline has now passed. However late entries will be considered, based on merits and placed on a waiting list. Late entries should contact Frances Chapman directly on f.c.chapman@abdn.ac.uk.
